Parental Perspectives on Youth Soccer: Club Operations, Player Development, and the Path Forward

A Qualitative Focus Group Study of the Philadelphia and South Jersey Region

• Club selection is overwhelmingly social and word-of-mouth driven — parents lack analytical tools or differentiated messaging to make informed choices, creating an acquisition bottleneck for quality-focused clubs
• A pervasive 'black box' opacity in club operations erodes parent trust — families cannot see how fees are allocated, how coaching decisions are made, or how player development is tracked
• Over-emphasis on athleticism at the expense of technical development, combined with premature competitive pressure, is producing players who burn out rather than develop — clubs that prioritize joy and technique will retain more players longer
